Are Hormones to blame for Acne?
Acne is at the top of the list for frustrating and demoralizing symptoms of hormonal changes and fluctuations in a woman’s body during her adult life. It can be caused by a variety of things but hormones are the most common culprit. One of the best ways in which to treat adult acne is to establish the root cause as this will give you an idea of what treatments will work best.
There are many clues that identify hormone-related acne including:
- The timing of your breakouts: Acne caused by hormonal changes usually occurs at predictable points during the menstrual cycle with many women experiencing breakouts during menses. Some women also experience breakouts during ovulation.
- The location of your acne: The common locations in which this type of acne appears is beneath the cheekbones and along the jaw line. Tiny pimples just below the lower lip and around the move are also associated with the reproductive system and may occur at ovulation. Acne on the forehead or bridge of the nose is usually associated with other causes.
- Shape, size, sensation, and appearance of acne: Hormonal acne is often deep, cystic, and sensitive to the touch. You may feel pain or pressure even when you are not touching it and while washing your face. It will be especially painful if you try to pop it and is more likely to leave a scar than other types. They may also appear flaky or dry despite feeling a pimple under the skin.
A lack of response to topical acne creams and over-the-counter products is another characteristic of hormone-related acne. It is often more effective to target the hormones themselves so talk to your health care provider or OB-GYN what options are available for you: they will have a better idea of effective treatments than your dermatologist in this case. Hormonal birth control can be used to correct acne in some cases and there are tests which can be performed in order to assess your current hormone balance.
Some natural ways to help improve the health of your skin and avoid breakouts include eating lots of veggies, especially members of the Brassica family such as broccoli and cabbage, and drinking lots of water. It is also important to be very gentle with your skin when washing your face. Remove any makeup you are wearing at the end of the day and don’t skimp on the sunscreen!
Remember, struggling with acne as an adult is not uncommon and your concerns should not be dismissed as mere vanity: hormonal fluctuations can have a large impact on many aspects of your health and should be addressed. Acne can be a warning sign that your body needs some TLC so consider your lifestyle and make an effort to eat healthier and treat your skin with care. With the right care, you can get your skin back to a healthy glow.
